A Doula

Is a woman who gives emotional and practical support to, primarily the woman, but also involves the father. In years gone by this support was usually given by the mothers mother, but in recent times life has got busier with families moving away from each other, maybe due to work or other reasons. The family support network that was once available, is no longer there. This is where a doula comes in and fills the support gap. This type of support also helps the whole family to relax and enjoy the experience.

In February 2006 I attended a Paramana Doula course run by Michel Odent, a well-known French obstetrician, and Liliana Lammers, an experienced Doula.

In 2006 I attended a BABS (Birth And Breastfeeding Support) course run by Newham Healthcare which provides support in Newham for new mothers and women that need support during labour.
